The World Nuclear University
Author: Hore-Lacy, Ian
Co-Author(s):

The WNU arose in 2003 out of concern about the reduction in tertiary courses in nuclear-related engineering in many countries, coupled with a realisation that the staff at many established plants were ageing and major recruitment would be required in the next decade.

The idea is to link the stronger schools and faculties worldwide so as to share teaching resources, enable specialisation, and encourage students to think internationally in following their interests educationally. The WNU network spans some 30 nations and is coordinated from a small headquarters in London. A key role is to define common criteria which should become accepted requirements for nuclear education programs, in order to improve the teaching everywhere. Actions of the WNU are developing in two major directions: the Working Groups, in charge of inter-university cooperation and of thematic developments, and an original education program, the first achievement of which was the Summer Institute dedicated to talented students and promising young professionals.

An overarching role of the WNU is to elevate the stature of professions associated with peaceful uses of nuclear technology in sustainable development. It aims to encourage a broader appreciation - particularly among students choosing careers - that nuclear science and engineering offer an exciting, future-oriented vocation in an expanding global industry which is providing essential service to humankind while adhering to high international standards of safety, performance and ethics.
