OPAL and Australia's Nuclear Future
Author:
Brace, Matthew
Co-Author(s):
This article outlines the capabilities of Australia's new research reactor OPAL which is to replace the 48 year old HIFAR in January 2007. The reactors are operated by ANSTO (Australian Nuclear Science and Technology organisation) and it is anticipated that OPAL will not only boost ANSTO's production of beneficial radioisotope products and irradiation services but will help Australian industry compete more successfully on the world stage. Australia is already internationally well respected in nuclear science and technology and maintains a permanent seat on the Board of Governors of the IAEA.
