Multi-Pin PWR Re-Flood Studies and Large Scale Eddy CFD Simulations
Author:
Co-Author(s):

This paper outlines a multi-pin re-flood model and further work in-hand on its development, and also developments in Large Eddy Simulation (LES) for nuclear reactor applications, all being performed under the auspices of KNOO Work Package 1 at Imperial College, London, and the University of Manchester, respectively. The authors describe the work at Imperial College which concerns a range of issues around the re-flooding of a PWR core following a loss of coolant accident. This body of work is building on recent work in this area, which has led to an embryonic multi-pin thermofluid-mechanical linked model, able to simulate the coupled behaviour of multiple pins. This multi-pin linked model is described in the article and the current projects designed to augment and build upon it are outlined. A series of projects at the University of Manchester under the KNOO programme addresses the application of advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods to the analysis of nuclear thermo-fluids problems. In particular, these cover the use of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) methods; in effect a half-way house between 'exact' but very expensive direct numerical simulation, and 'traditional' Reynolds averaged CFD.
