Radiation Chemistry in the UKPast, Present & Future
Author: Dr Maliyadde Chandratillake
Co-Author(s):

The paper maintains that radiation chemistry has proved to be fundamental and a great asset to both building and maintaining the UK’s nuclear industry. Radiation chemistry is not an abstract subject of only academic interest. It has applications in a broad range of areas: the nuclear industry, medicine, and agriculture to name but a few. Without a doubt, most of the applications and issues associated with radiation chemistry are encountered within the nuclear industry whereas in other industries, relatively fewer radiation chemistry issues are encountered. Radiation is present at all stages in the nuclear fuel cycle, from ore extraction through to final waste and it causes issues of concern at all stages.
Revitalisation of radiation chemistry skills and knowledge is therefore essential to enable such existing skills and knowledge to be passed on to the next generation but there is a severe shortage of young radiation chemists in the UK and this is having an obvious impact in the nuclear industry.
