UK's Nuclear New BuildCan Industry Deliver?
Author:
Wright, Jim
Co-Author(s):
There are two main driving issues in the energy debate: energy security and global warming. Without new nuclear build there will be a negative effect on the UK’s aim to reduce CO2 emissions and also there will be a large increase in the UK’s dependence on imported natural gas which will leave energy supplies more vulnerable to international instability. The argument is made for more nuclear power stations but how will these come about as the large players of the 1950s - ‘70s have all but disappeared? The answer is from overseas suppliers but UK’s strengths shouldn’t be overlooked: operating the power stations, owning the sites, providing the finance, integrating the programme and constructing the stations.
