Red-Impact is a three year, EC 6th Framework Programme. The full project title is: Impact of Partitioning, Transmutation and Waste Reduction Technologies on the Final Waste Disposal Project. The study is an international collaboration between several institutions in eleven European countries. The aim of the Red-Impact project is to assess the effects of partitioning and transmutation (P&T) on geological disposal, waste management, economic, environmental and social issues. This work covers the current fleet of nuclear reactors and the evolution of reactor and reprocessing technologies and advanced fuel cycles. The final objective is the evaluation of the impact on the final disposal and environment. This project is expected to provide a major advance to partitioning and transmutation, conditioning (P&TC) and waste reduction technologies for nuclear waste management. It will comprehensively assess the environmental, economic and societal costs, benefits and difficulties associated with these technologies. The Red-Impact project is due to end by 28 February 2007. |
