The New ILW Store at Sellafield
Author: Robertson, Anthony
Co-Author(s):

Intermediate Level Waste (ILW), arising from commercial reprocessing operations, is currently stored in a number of ILW stores at the Sellafield site in Cumbria. There is limited space left in these
stores when compared with the predicted reprocessing arisings over the coming years; thus the provision of additional storage capacity is required and this is outlined in this article. A review of the near-term ILW storage options was undertaken in December 2003 to March 2004 and recommended that a third Encapsulated Product Store (EPS3) should be constructed for the storage of reprocessing arisings from 2011 onwards. This was endorsed by the BNFL Board in May 2004 and the EPS3 project was initiated. The article describes the design of this new store which will be based on an existing Encapsulated Product Store (EPS2) for ILW arising from reprocessing operations.
