Delivering Nuclear Science & Technology Solutions through the US National Laboratory System
Author: Hill, David

With a solid record of performance over the last 30 years and favorable new government policies, the U.S. nuclear power industry is now on the verge of building new nuclear power plants. While the current fleet will continue to operate safely and reliably for many years to come, new technologies will be needed in the future. Five years ago, the U.S. designated the Idaho National Laboratory as the lead government laboratory to develop advanced nuclear energy technologies
with universities, other national labs, industry and international research organizations. Battelle, the world's largest nonprofit research firm, operating through its wholly-owned limited liability company - Battelle Energy Alliance - was awarded a multi-year contract to lead the lab's transformation to an internationally-recognized institution. With solid programmatic growth and demonstrated results in three short years, the Battelle Energy Alliance consortium is delivering on the government's vision. This article examines Battelle's approach to building a national laboratory and to delivering nuclear science and technology for energy security, space exploration, medicine, and to protect citizens and critical infrastructures from global threats of terrorism.
