SellafieldThe Decommissioning Challenge
Author:
Co-Author(s):

The Sellafield Site in West Cumbria has been a key part of the nuclear industry for more than five decades and, with the focus of the site now moving away from operational activities, the resulting
decommissioning programme probably represents one of the most complex and challenging portfolios in the world today. Using case study examples, including the explosive demolition of the cooling towers at the world's first nuclear power station, Calder Hall, this article is intended to give an overview of the many challenges that the workforce at Sellafield are facing, and the progress that is being made in reducing the hazards and cleaning up this historic legacy.
