Decommissioning of Sellafield's Caesium Extraction Plant
Author:
MacPherson, Andrew
Co-Author(s):
Sellafield Site's £42million decommissioning programme is now well underway with progress being made right across this extremely complex and diverse portfolio. Although many of the challenges
can be tackled using conventional techniques, familiar to many other industries, at times the nuclear environment demands a different and slightly more innovative approach. The article concentrates on one such project being currently undertaken by Sellafield Nuclear Decommissioning and Major Projects Group: the decommissioning of a redundant Caesium Extraction Plant (CEP). The plant, constructed in 1951, is located in the heart of the site's heavily congested chemical separation area and, to compound matters further, the actual extraction plant sits on the roof of a building which housed six stainless steel tanks used to store Highly Active Residues (HAR) arising from historical reprocessing activities.
