| To date, successive governments have failed to implement a long-term strategy for managing the UK’s existing radioactive waste legacy. Nuclear power has been generating electricity in the UK for ~50 years. During this period, we have developed three generations of nuclear power stations, in addition to facilities for nuclear research, reprocessing, fuel enrichment, atomic weapons, etc, all of which have been producing radioactive waste without a clear steer from government with regards to decommissioning and final disposal routes. Surely our Government needs to address the ethics of investing in a programme of new nuclear build without first dealing with our existing legacies; to this end, it should publish a considered and effective strategy for the management of decommissioning and long-term waste disposal.
