Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) in the Oil and Gas industry
Author:
Morgan, Rhodri
Co-Author(s):
Fossil fuels are a source of natural radiation; for instance, petroleum in the earth's crust was created within ancient seas through the decay of sea life. Consequently, petroleum deposits often occur in aquifers containing brine which acts as a solvent for radionuclide-containing minerals naturally occurring within the earth's crust. These precipitate out forming various wastes and, whilst harmless in their natural state, extraction of oil and gas reserves results in large quantities of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) being excavated and concentrated within waste products.
Page 1 of 2 Journal of the Nuclear Institute Nuclear Future The implications of accumulation and concentration of NORM waste arising from practices used in the oil and gas extraction industries is an issue in need of serious attention. The concern will be of greater impact should current treatment and disposal routes for NORM waste alter or cease; a scenario which may occur through changes initiated via international law and disseminated through
to national parliaments.
