UK Nuclear Regulation for the 21st Century
Author: Allars, Kevin, Weightman, Mike
Co-Author(s):

Public opinion on new nuclear power may be divided, but all would share one common view: that the generation of nuclear power needs to be regulated to ensure that high levels of nuclear safety and security are maintained. This is where the Health and Safety Executive's Nuclear Directorate (ND) has a key role to play. In the UK, the safety and security of the UK's nuclear industry is regulated by the HSE's Nuclear Directorate (ND), with its overarching mission of 'Securing the Protection of People and Society from the Hazards of the Nuclear Industry'. This is a big responsibility, but it has successfully fulfilled it over the last fifty years and is internationally recognised as a leading nuclear safety regulator. However, it recognises that demands change and it always has to be alert and fit for future challenges. The HSE is therefore working with the Department of Work and Pensions and the Department of Energy and Climate Change to turn ND into a Statutory Corporation. This change of status will allow ND to create a forward-thinking, world-leading nuclear regulator fit for whatever future challenges face it, and to raise the bar in terms of technical and regulatory excellence.
